document.write('Encaustic was the principle media for easel paintings but its origins probably lay in the Greek custom of painting sculpture in bright colors as in this hypothetical coloring of the Laocoon by Hagesandros, Athenodoros, and Polydoros c150 BC. Encaustic was a durable paint that could withstand weather over a long period of time. It was also used for waterproofing ships. It soon became the Greeks favorite medium for portraits and other paintings. ');

document.write('Just refined beeswax, resin, and pigment are required. Stabilizers, preservatives and other additives are not needed. In many ways this is the least problematic of all the paint media in terms of durability. The only thing it is sensitive to is heat. The artists only problem is the heating of the wax and tools to make the artwork. Almost all pigments are happy to be dispersed in hot wax, and even notoriously difficult to disperse pigments tend to be friendlier in Encaustic.');
